My Allen Strange Story + Show Review

I was born during the original run of the show, so I never had a chance to watch it on TV, and I was a huge fan of Nickelodeon as a kid, but from 11 1/2 and-a-half to 21-and-a-half I didn’t watch it.  I got back into Nick thanks to Drake & Josh, and I haven’t looked back since.  Aside from Allen Strange, I watch Drake & Josh and Double Dare pretty regularly and sometimes iCarly, Victorious, Big Time Rush, Legends of the Hidden Temple and Kenan & Kel when it comes to Nick. I didn’t watch Allen Strange until 2025 because the a lot of the series (including the finale) was lost media and I didn’t want to watch a show with missing episodes, especially if I had no way of knowing how the series was going to end. I made this blog to one, show my appreciation for this great show and two, serve as an archive for the show if it ever gets taken down again. I liked a lot about this show.  I liked all 3 of the main characters & Hamilton, the acting, the writing, the pac...

Character Review: Josh Stevenson

Josh is a smart, caring (when he has to be), and resourceful 11 year old boy, and he’s a vital part of the main trio. He reminds me of when I was his age in many ways. Overall, Josh is great, just like the rest of the main trio and Hamilton. He preferred computers over sports, he liked playing video games and watching TV, he was smarter than your average kid, and he got good grades in school. We both loved comic books. He also wasn’t very popular, but wasn’t the laughingstock of the school either. I can’t say that I had his knowledge of technology or aliens, however. I enjoy his fascination with aliens. I think it was somewhat silly that Josh would always parade his love of aliens to his father, while at the same time harboring an alien behind his back. But, it did make for interesting plots. I liked Josh’s friendship with Allen. Given Josh’s interest in aliens, it must have been destiny for an alien-obsessed but chill (unlike Phil Berg) kid like Josh to meet Allen. I’m glad that Josh ...

Character Review: Hamilton Gerrigan

Hamilton is one of my favorite characters on the show. While he isn’t the brightest and his antics can get a bit annoying sometimes, it’s always great to see him on screen. He’s a great friend to Allen, Robbie & Josh and he’s pretty good at French Horn (for a high schooler). I felt bad that he didn’t have many friends growing up, so I’m glad he found the main 3 to hang out with. Even though Robbie didn’t want to date him, I felt they should have had an episode where they dated, where somehow Robbie had feelings for Hamilton. If I were to like any ship in the show, it’d be that one. I liked that Robbie was supportive of him despite being initially weirded out by him, especially since she knows he has a pretty big crush on her. Overall, Hamilton is a bit stupid and he can get annoying, and I wished him and Robbie would date because he has a lot of feelings for her and she can definitely fix him. His catchphrase is "Yes, absolutely yes!" and sometimes "No, absolutely no...

Character Review: Allen Strange (the Xelan boy)

Allen is an alien from the planet Xela who is trying to find his way back home. He is caring and considerate, even though he doesn’t really understand Earth much. His Xelan nature doesn’t allow him to lie, so he is forced into honesty. He has many powers, which are listed on the Journey of Allen Strange Wikipedia page and the Alien Species wiki. His relationship with Josh and Robbie is something to consider. Robbie and Josh put themselves in a lot of risk holding Allen in their house, especially since they have to keep him a secret from the dad, and especially the alien hunters who live in the same freaking town as them. However, I didn’t like how he gave in to Josh’s craziness in the second-to-last episode “Life of the Party”. He was super reckless with his behavior, which isn’t usually like him, and while I do think Manfred was being kind of tough, their behavior was not okay. Overall, Allen is a great character. I think he was played and written well, and was also a great main chara...

Character Review: Robbie Stevenson

Robbie is a 15 year old girl played by the obscure actress Erin J. Dean.  She’s a surfer, she’s on the track team and she also makes jewelry. Supposedly she has bad grades on the show, to the extent that she was excited to get a B in one episode (I don’t remember which one) because she had never gotten a grade that high in her life, and she was 15. I didn’t see her as stupid. Robbie may not always get along with her brother Josh, and sometimes even Allen, but they always find their way back to each other. The friendship between Robbie and Allen was so close that I was surprised that they didn’t kiss by the end of the show like Aang and Katara did in Avatar’s finale. Robbie has her angry moments and she can usually win an argument, but she’s usually calm and when she’s calm, she’s a friendly and pleasant person. 95% of her actions are on the side of good, and when they aren’t, they’re usually not too bad to begin with. Just selfish teenage girl BS, not actual evil like Sam Pu...

S3 E18 Message from Beyond

A meteor is coming and Allen & Josh go to a field to retrieve it, but ARC finds them and they go home. ARC chases them on their bikes and Josh drops his backpack, which ARC retrieves. Robbie and Erika are confronted by a lady who claims she’s working for a magazine. She suggests their magazine go mainstream, which Robbie supports but Erika doesn’t. In the attic, Robbie says they should destroy the meteor and she gets mad at Josh because she has magazine work to do. Josh tries looking stuff up about the meteor, but ARC has already tracked it. Robbie and Erika have an argument about their magazine plans. Josh suspects that Robbie is working for ARC, and the magazine lady is revealed to be working for ARC. Josh heard noise from the meteor and Allen cleans up the audio, revealing it’s a Xelan meteor. It says that Xela is freezing over and dying. Robbie comes back in an ARC suit after going with the “magazine lady” for a meeting. Josh freaks out over Robbie coming out of the ARC car, bu...

S3 E17 Life of the Party

Allen eats pop rocks with soda, and bubbles of his head form Xelan style. Then the theme plays. Josh needs someone to watch him during Robbie’s track thing, so Allen gets Manfred. They get Mr. Stevenson’s credit card. On the walk home from school, Josh talks to Plato while Hamilton gets nervous when Allen brings up his birthday. Josh talks about throwing a party, which Allen thinks would be good for Hamilton. At home, Manfred blocks the TV screen from Josh and Allen’s video game. After Josh suggests that Manfred try on Mr. Stevenson’s clothes, him and Allen order food from a bunch of places. Mr. Stevenson calls Manfred and he lectures the two boys after they make a mess and are late for school. Allen and Josh hang out with Plato as Josh prepares his gaming thumb. Hamilton comes to the house and is surprised with a birthday cake, which brings back PTSD of a house fire to him and he freaks out. Manfred quickly ends the party, but more people come anyway. Josh tricks Manfred into thinking...

S3 E16 Heroes

Josh launches Allen using a cannon for a fair, and he does a perfect job. Then the theme plays. Robbie complains that Allen isn’t keeping a low enough profile and also that they did it just to get a wrestler’s mask (The Mutilator) and she doesn’t like the wrestler. Talia and Robbie talk about her mom moving to Delport, and Talia talk about how she can put in a good word for Mrs. Stevenson.  Mr. Stevenson suggests Manfred & the two boys go fishing, and they do. Mr. Stevenson and Manfred talk about how they can get their sons’ attention. Manfred suggests he get tickets to the wrestling game. After some pushing, Robbie gives Talia her new jacket. Josh and Allen get their tickets and The Mutilator comes to the house. The wrestler then takes a photo with the 2 boys and they leave the house. Mrs. Stevenson fixes the door and talks to Robbie. At the wrestling gym, the boys and The Mutilator laugh about the fact that Manfred and Mr. Stevenson can’t lift a heavy weight. The Mutilator tu...

S3 E15 Bringing up Baby

Mr. Stevenson finds an embarrassing photo of Josh as an even smaller kid, and Robbie & Allen talk about babies. Then the theme plays. Miss String assigns a “baby”-raising project to the class. Robbie teams with Allen, and Hamilton teams up with Talia. Allen gets mad about having to raise a baby because Xelans do it differently. Talia gets mad because she finds Hamilton’s “parenting” very weird. Josh gets moved to Robbie’s computer science class because he’s so good at it. Allen rocks the baby in the air with Xelan powers, which Robbie hates and gives him a parenting book, which Allen finds outdated. As Robbie and Allen continue their “parenting”, they get mad at each other and Robbie brings the child to her room. Josh makes fun of her in the halls. Hamilton is very excited about his baby, and he gets mad that the baby was in Talia’s locker the whole time. Hamilton accidentally rips off the baby’s leg, which he freaks out about until Talia reattaches it. Josh and Talia get in an arg...

S3 E14 Out to Lunch

Robbie and Talia get an awful school lunch, which somehow Allen likes. Robbie teases Allen with an apple but he uses his Xelan powers to get it. Then the theme plays. Robbie encourages Josh to do rock climbing. Robbie, Allen, Erika and Talia decide to publish a newsletter and start a chant against the poor food quality, but Ms. String shuts it down. At home, Mr. Stevenson talked to Robbie and Allen about protesting peacefully. Josh gets excited about climbing. A food fight breaks out after Talia encourages everyone to do so. Ms. String walks in and gives everyone Saturday detention, which angers Josh because he thought he was going climbing and he goes off on Robbie and Allen in the attic about how they don’t get punished. Manfred suggests that he come along to rock climbing, making Josh anxious about the day. At Saturday detention, Robbie, Talia and Erika go off on Allen. They wait a while until Miss String assigns them to clean the lunchroom. At rock climbing, Josh prepares Manfred w...

S3 E13 Allen on TV

Allen watches a 50s sitcom, but he’s too invested in it to pay attention to the other 2.  He gets hypnotized by the TV later on. Then the theme plays. Allen is going to be late to school, and Robbie brings up that he has to do an oral report, which he didn’t study for the night before. At family breakfast, Allen watches TV again.  Mr. Stevenson arranges a golf game with Manfred and Robbie, after which Manfred hits a golf ball in the house. Allen gives a TV-like oral report, which Robbie is not impressed by. He then goes right back to watching TV, which makes Robbie mad. Allen misses wrestling practice. In the attic, he’s still watching TV and Robbie turns it off. But when she leaves, he finds himself watching it again, and the TV sucks him into the screen. Robbie and Josh find Allen in the screen, and he doesn’t want to help himself get out. Allen asks Josh to put on Life with Loretta, which he does after some convincing. Mr. Stevenson teaches Robbie how to play golf with Manf...

S3 E12 Love Stinks

Hamilton is getting ready for a Valentine’s Day event at his family’s go kart place. Allen uses Xelan powers to fix Hamilton’s cart, but it goes crazy and crashes. Then the theme plays. Robbie explains about how she doesn’t like Valentine’s Day and Allen suggests she give a Valentine to Hamilton, which she declines. Robbie receives a note from Alazar (her boyfriend in Alien Vacation), so her mood changes. Mr. Stevenson and Robbie have a conversation about him dating other women, which she approves of. At school, Talia arranges “boyfriend lessons” for Allen and Hamilton, which is just them carrying her stuff. Robbie and Erika sell candies and Robbie talks vaguely about Alazar with Erika. Erika thinks Allen has a crush on her, which he doesn’t. Hamilton thinks the boyfriend lessons are to teach him how to get Robbie, so he’s very excited. Erika gets mad at Allen because she thinks he led her on. Hamilton continues his “boyfriend lessons”, and gets excited because he thinks it’s going to ...

S3 E11 A Burp in Time

Allen, Hamilton and Josh prepare for a game of basketball with some other guys.  They have a burping contest for no reason and when Allen burps, time is reversed a few seconds. To demonstrate, Allen dribbles his head around for a few seconds and reverses time after so no one would notice. Mr. Stevenson tells Robbie that if she doesn’t improve her grades, he’s not going to let her surf, so she decides to study all night. She goes to her dad’s office to study, where Allen does his burp thing without her permission, so she gets mad. They keep messing with Robbie and she gets madder than I’ve ever seen her. Allen and Josh play video games and reverse time a bunch more, which causes Robbie to fail her history test. She gets mad at Allen. At the attic, Robbie yells at Allen some more, but he reverses time again and this time, Robbie passes her test with an A+.  Later in the living room, the main 3 are watching TV and they get happy about the fact that they can do the burp thing when...

S3 E10 Out on a Limb

The main 3 are in the attic and Josh talks about this person he’s talking to online called “PennyHenny”. Josh gets caught in one of the many traps he set in the attic, and the theme song plays. Josh accidentally gives too much info to PennyHenny, who turns out to be Phil Berg. Josh watches Phil Berg’s preschool show for entertainment and is about to turn it off until Phil talks about Trycloid crystals. Plato rollerblades in the house and gives Josh a hard time about how he will trust strangers but can’t hang out with his friends. Plato and Josh watch Watch the Skies and they decide to prank Phil Berg by telling him that an “alien species” that says “hello how are you” as something that sounds like “oh look what a geek I am.” Allen and Robbie talk about their project on the town history, where Allen talks about how he wants to interview someone 800 years old. It turns out to be a tree, which is about to be cut down to make room for a library Mr. Stevenson is working on. The two organize...

S3 E9 Blue Up

Allen doesn’t understand music. Robbie and Hamilton try and fail to help him. At school, Allen and Hamilton rehearse at band practice, where Allen catches Hamilton fake playing. Later, Josh and Allen go to the park, where Allen uses his Xelan powers to fly and talk to birds about music. At school again, Robbie walks in on Hamilton playing French horn well, but he can only do it when people aren’t watching. Robbie gives him a pep talk, but he freaks out when Robbie tells him he has a solo to perform. Talia enters a photography contest and takes pictures. At the park, she sees Phil Berg and takes a photo of him on the ground in defeat, and the photo picks up Allen going Xelan. The main 3 have a tense discussion about this in the attic. At first, Robbie has her doubts, but the photo does make it to the news. Phil Berg gets the paper and thinks he sees an alien. At the school photo room, Talia enlarges the mysterious spot and tells her findings to Phil Berg, which they plan to report on Ph...

Josh discovers that Robbie’s science teacher was involved in an alien accident in a jet, and that he has a lot of trauma over it. In Robbie’s dream, Hamilton’s chemistry lab accident, (which is mentioned many times throughout the series) occurs and then the school explodes. Robbie decides to expose Mr. Sutton’s alien experience to the whole school and they make fun of him to the point that he quits. Robbie tries to convince him otherwise, but it’s too late. Hamilton and Allen try & fail to console Robbie, and Robbie gets Erika to help her. The 4 spread petitions and get people to sign it. Robbie sees Mr....

Hamilton worries about his grades and looks for Allen at the beach, who was underwater. They talk about their project before Hamilton has to go. At school the next day, Allen looks for Hamilton, not knowing where he is. Robbie, Allen and Erika then go to the beach to talk about where he is. Later, Allen goes to Hamilton’s old neighborhood to look for him. After 3 days, Hamilton is nowhere to be seen. Allen uses his Xelan powers to conclude that Hamilton is at his go kart track, where he indeed is. He was never missing to begin with. Allen and Hamilton go back to the beach to finish their project at the last minute. After, they go kart race. Watch the Skies gets cancelled and Phil Berg has to be a children’s entertainer.

S3 E6 A Day at the Races

Josh, Allen and Hamilton hang out in the attic during a storm, and Allen turns Xelan after being struck by lightning. Somehow Hamilton doesn’t notice. Then, he helps Hamilton get a bird house from a tree discreetly and Hamilton is convinced that he has powers. He sees a kid getting bullied and decides to fight the bully, with Allen once again using his powers. Some time later, while Hamilton is in the attic with the boys, Josh tells him to jump out the window, which he does. He survives, but realizes his powers don’t exist. Robbie meets Talia, who is her competitor. They become friends, but Talia is secretly trying to sabotage Robbie at her game, such as when she suggests Robbie to drink 3 coffees. Robbie loses the race and gets upset. Talia and Robbie then get into a carbs eating match, which is again Talia secretly sabotaging Robbie by making her sick. I don’t think Robbie should have trusted Talia.

The 3 make confetti to celebrate New Year’s 2000 (which was my first New Year’s). Then the theme song starts. After that, they watch Phil Berg until the mom comes to find a time capsule at the beach with the family, in which Robbie finds a picture she drew which signifies that Allen and her was destiny. Robbie gets mad about this and wants nothing to do with him since she feels like she has no future to herself. Both of them have nightmare scenarios in their heads about their “destinies”. After their scenarios, they talk to each other again when they’re at the beach filling up the new time capsule and they get along again. At the end of the episode, the family and Allen watch Phil Berg to celebrate the new year.

The 3, the dad, and Manfred watch a solar flare, and Allen’s Xelaness acts up for a second, with Robbie being caught in it.  Later however, whenever Allen moves, so does Robbie and she gets mad about this. When Josh and Allen go looking for solar flare info, Allen runs low on Xelan powers and Robbie gets sick. She’s in the hospital, and it’s because of Allen unintentionally. In her sickness, Robbie goes to Xela in her head. The 2 boys move Robbie out of the hospital and onto the roof, and Allen does some Xelan ritual to save Robbie. It works, but Allen goes unconscious for a few seconds. At the end of the episode, the two have a rooftop discussion about dreams.

Josh gets into some crazy lecture about his “school project” and how he can’t hang out with his mom. Hamilton thinks they’re birdwatching because Josh calls the satellites Birds, and he literally goes birdwatching. Josh knocks down the equipment, which puts a hole through the roof and the mom investigates the noise. Hamilton fixed the roof, but then he starts dancing so hard that he messes up the wiring again and the classified data accidentally ends up on the family TV. Robbie makes plans to hang out with her mom, but she changes her mind without her mom knowing. They get different dresses for a dance Robbie’s going to, and it causes tension between them. Allen and Robbie talk it through, and then her mom shows ...

Allen and Josh go to a carnival and go to the Phil Berg kiosk, but it’s rigged to detect aliens. Luckily for Allen, Phil messes up the sensors by accident when Allen gets to the kiosk. But when Allen starts to get sick and the 2 see Shaw, they return home. Allen’s human and Xelan forms split as a result of the sensors’ impact.  Allen’s pure Xelan personality is not as friendly as human Allen’s, and this causes some issues, both in the attic and during the mission where they have to rescue Robbie from ARC. The main 3 and Xelan Allen infiltrate the studio to fix Allen. Berg and Shaw argue over their alien findings. Xelan and human Allen argue too. Robbie sneaks into the studio herself and caught, where Berg & Shaw plan on experimenting on her. Josh and Allen briefly go home. However, when Allen uses Xelan powers on the computer, the technology goes crazy at school and Robbie pulls the fire alarm to clear the halls. Robbie & Allen get suspended for a week for it all and the dad gets very mad at Robbie. The dad wants to speak to Manfred and it takes Robbie and Allen a lot of effort to try to get him assembled. Even though Manfred was given instructions by Robbie to get them off the hook, he accidentally makes it worse for the two of them. Josh, Robbie and Allen have to do community service as a result, despite the dad not knowing Josh had involvement.

Another earthquake happens and after watching Watch the Skies, Allen tells the 2 siblings he has to go alone. Allen talks to a lizard on his way to the site.  On the Trycloid site, he submits himself but it turns out the Trycloids don’t want him. S2 E24 Down the Tube

Josh also wants his space from Robbie and everyone else.  In the attic, Allen tries to ease the two siblings’ anger, but it doesn’t work. On a walk, Allen and Hamilton talk about their plans for the party and take the bus. At home, Robbie reluctantly agrees to bring Josh to the party, but she finds out that he was planning on pranking the party. Allen and Hamilton rent a big tube from the junk dealer. Robbie leaves Josh home alone like he wants to be. At the bus stop, Allen and Hamilton try to get the tube on the bus but it doesn’t fit. At gym class, Josh does better this time thanks to the Xelan boost.  Robbie sees her dad is made a mess in the kitchen. Josh talks to Allen about his success in gym class and his dad offers to play catch with him, which Robbie yells about because they still haven’t cleaned up.  Robbie complains about her situation to Erika, and she decides not to clean up after them. Josh has another good game thanks to the boost and makes the team. In the attic, Robbie complains to Josh about hard work, and Allen says the connection will run out eventually and that he won’t do it again, which causes an argument with Josh. He prepares to play the game without the Xelan help. Robbie wants to do the laundry, but Erika stops her. Josh wins the game for the t...

S2 E22 All Apologies

In Robbie’s room (or Erika’s room I'm not sure), Robbie suggests to Erika that she should start her magazine, and they agree to do it. In the attic, Hamilton talks to Allen and Josh about a superhero named Vibra Guy. Allen gets mad and goes Xelan when Hamilton talks trash about aliens. The student newspaper leader looks over Robbie and Erika’s magazine, and Robbie gets mad that she can’t get girls’ sports on 2 pages of the magazine. At home, Allen tries to make Robbie happier, which works until he talks about how the student news leader gave him a job. The 3 boys watch an old movie negatively portraying aliens, which angers Allen, and he decides to do something about the “lies” (I don’t understand why Allen is mad about this considering Trycloids and Makrobs literally exist). Erika does the new magazine without Robbie. Robbie’s dad helps her with her magazine idea. Allen decides to send his pro-alien points of view to Hollywood. Josh decides to write his letters for him. When Robbi...

Allen explains that the spaces turn into universes at some point in their lives, and eventually one of them follows Josh home. Robbie says her jewelry designs didn’t make the cut. Mr. Stevenson sees the bug and tries to kill it, but it multiplies. Robbie does the same and she has the same outcome. Mr. Stevenson tells Josh he has to get rid of the bugs or else he’s going to call an exterminator. They catch some of the bugs, but not all of them, which prompts the dad to call the exterminator. The 2 adults go over their plans. The exterminator decides to go into the attic, but the boys put the space bugs in the pod to hide it. In the field, Phil Berg looks for spac...

The Stevensons are each looking for their stuff, to the point they ignore Allen, who finds their stuff. Allen decides to look for new friends, who he finds in some thieves who manipulate him into unlocking bikes for them. They give him the nickname “slick” and give him a stolen bike. He talks to Robbie, who disapproves of Allen’s new “friends”. On the bleachers, Allen is recruited into a robbery by the two. Mrs. Stevenson comes to the house and her & Josh examine an alien autopsy. He finds the alien doctor. When Allen comes home to go to the robbery, Robbie tries to stop him. Allen and the 2 criminals break in and enter the warehouse they’re going to rob, but Allen is caught by police while the others run away. When Allen comes home, he tries to talk to Robbie, but she wants nothing to do with him. Josh and his mom go over the alien doctor’s resume and asks his mom not to meet him. They both get in trouble for talking during class. Allen thinks Miss String is an alien because of her “lies”.  At the beach, Robbie is offered by Zero to take over the kiosk for the day, which she accepts. In the attic, Allen tells Josh about the signs of a Makrob, the lying alien species. Zero notices some of the merch is stolen, and at home, Robbie talks about it with her dad and Erika. Allen spies on Miss String and continues to think she’s an alien. Zero talks to Robbie about the missing goods and asks her to be proactive about it. Allen goes to school later in the day to look at Ms. String’s records and he sees it says “experiment” by his name, which angers him and he gets detention for a month. At home, Allen and Josh decide to stop Ms. String because she’s an alien and they make a containment and freezing machine. At school, R...

She gives him a second chance. Allen and Robbie talk about race in the attic. A robot crashes in the attic. The robot says it’s come to Earth for its career. The robot and Allen talks trash about humans, which Robbie gets upset about. Josh shows the robot a tour of the house. The robot decides to eat Robbie’s project and she gets mad. The robot tells Allen about slavery and the civil rights struggle, and the next day at school, Allen confronts Robbie about how she didn’t tell him about slavery, and they get into an argument. Robbie tells Allen to find out the truth for himself. Josh shows the robot around Delport, but he fails to grasp human society. Allen decides to remove the spra...

On “Watch the Skies”, the Trycloid mark activates Phil again and takes over him. Phil gives a Trycloid message and Allen realizes the stars in the sky were another Trycloid message. Robbie and Erika talk about Mr. Stevenson. Later, Robbie calls her dad and hears a woman on the line, making her suspicious. Josh and Allen make their way into the studio and see Phil Berg going crazy over the alien stuff. Allen says it’s because he’s going to hatch Trycloid eggs, which he eventually does (very disturbing and not suitable for kids) Robbie and Erika go to the beach, where they spy on Mr. Stevenson talking to “his woman”. Robbie sees them dancing and gets mad. Robbie and Erika talk about stepmothers. ...
